Stop Explaining Yourself

I’ve seen a lot of people, agencies and businesses start to overexplain themselves recently and it’s kind of been bothering me. This is something I’ve identified in business and in life, and when you stop explaining yourself, some truly magical things start to happen.

Let’s take a step back for a moment, ok?

I’ve worked as a Director of Business Development for a long time and grew up with a single mother - so when I actually connected these two things - yearning for others approval - I was able to connect the dots and start to fix some of my mistakes. Now, childhood psychology aside, there are some pretty fucking incredible things that happen when you start to not care and decide that not explaining yourself is the way to go.

Let’s dive in here to what happens when you stop explaining yourself

  • You save time

  • You save energy

  • People respect your decision

  • People take you seriously

  • You keep your value high

  • Your authority becomes final

  • You keep your word to others and yourself

  • You learn to live with the consequences of your decision - good or bad

Now, I’m not saying you won’t make a mistake. You will. But, when you save time, money, and people respect your decision-making abilities, all of a sudden your stock goes up. People will value your time now. They won’t jerk you around. Your word becomes your bond, people will take you seriously. This is not a power of manipulation tactic, but seriously….think about a time when someone last explained themselves to you.

Did you believe them? Was your stock in them raised or lowered?

When you make a decision and then follow it up with explaining yourself, what you do is lower your value by trying to fill them with logic and reasoning. Stop doing this.

As an agency, business or person - when you make a decision, go with it!

Adopt the mindset of: “I never lose, I either win or I learn.”

Nelson Mandela first said that, and that is the mindset you need to have when making a decision to stick with something. When you explain yourself, you are not only trying to justify it (because you don’t believe it yourself on the conscious level), but you also are conveying that you don’t expect the other person to accept or believe it, as well.

Make sense?

I made a YouTube video on this you can watch below. Hope this hammers the point home. Businesses, agencies, people, beware! Pay attention to this shit! I learned it the hard way so you can learn it the easy way now.

See ya out there. Know your worth!
