Finding Your Purpose

Victory is sweetest when you’ve known defeat.
— Malcom Forbes

Read that quote above again.

Victory is sweetest when you’ve known defeat.

When was the last time you felt defeated? Was it after losing a job? Losing a relationship? Getting shot down at work with an idea you had? Was it with a friend? A family member?

Often times when we take a step out of our comfort zone, we can get shot down pretty easily. We can falter. We can make a mistake. We can make an error.

“To err is to be human.” - Alexander Pope said that in an, ‘Essay to Criticism.’ Which you should read and google in your spare time.

And it is beyond true. We as humans make a lot of errors, but that doesn’t mean we run back into our comfort zones. Sometimes it means we push even harder. We are not going to get it right the first time, and part of being a human is to learn, evolve, grow, adapt, pivot, and continue trying. It doesn’t always mean trying the same thing over and over again. That, is the definition of insanity, but your job as a person is to keep trying, to keep going after your goals. Humans are goal-oriented, meaning that we have to climb towards something. It is only then that we feel intrinsically rewarded when we get that hit of dopamine. When we are actively working towards our goals, dreams, desires and aspirations, we feel progress. That dopamine hit actively rewards our brain with euphoria, urging us to continue the pursuit of that which makes us happy. To have goals, to have dreams, and actively work towards them, is to be a human on your purpose and mission.

Finding Your Purpose

One of the easiest ways to find your purpose is to write them down each and every day. Every morning and every night, write them down. You can also meditate on them. You can also simply just begin to write a few things down, but to find your goals and your purpose it essentially boils down to three things and is defined by:

1) You talk about these things on a Saturday night at 10 pm

2) It makes you money

3) It helps other people or the world

I would say these THREE things constitute your purpose. Think about it….is it teaching yoga? Writing a book? Teaching sports? Volunteering your time? Building a business, being a mentor, being an angel investor? Anything that falls into these three categories should be YOUR purpose.

It is ok if you don’t have anything that currently fits this space, but it could be starting a blog, it could be being a skydiving instructor, it could be walking dogs, or literally doing anything. But, as you begin to question what YOUR purpose is, use the three questions above to determine the success of your purpose.

Can you talk about it on a Saturday night? Does it give you energy when you wake up? Is it something you are constantly thinking about?

If that answer is yes - that is your purpose. Those are your goals, actively work towards them. Pursue them, meditate on them, crush your goals, show people who the fuck you are and don’t let anyone stand in your way. You don’t need to know how to get there exactly, you just need to have a bit of the map before you take your first step. Happiness is found in the journey, not the destination.
